Good oral hygiene (Brushing and flossing) is very important in prevention of all dental disease. Even with good cleaning, dental decay (Dental caries) will still occur if there is too much sugar in your diet. It is very difficult to completely avoid sugar, so it is important to reduce the number of snacks and drinks containing sugar between meals. Snacking (Grazing) or drinking soft/sports drinks between meals can cause cavities even if you clean your teeth well afterwards. If you do have a problem with ongoing dental decay, it is important to look very carefully at your diet to identify and reduce as much sugar as possible.
If your cleaning is adequate and you have removed any sources of sugar from your diet and you continue to get decay then ask your dentist about further preventative measures that might be available such as fluoride treatment.
